Laguna Hills history:
In the early 1800’s, after Mexico separated itself from Spain, many
loyalists were given large grants of land in California. The 13,000
acre Rancho Niguel was given to Don Juan Avila and this is where
Laguna Hills would later locate. The land was sold to Lewis Moulton in
1874. With this purchase the ranch was increased to 22,000 acres. The
ranch was used mainly for sheep and cattle raising. In the early
1960’s, the Moulton Ranch was divided up. A portion of this division
became known as Laguna Hills. The residents voted on 5 March 1991 and
the effort for cityhood was realized. The official date for the
incorporation is 20 December 1991. Later, in November 1995, the north
Laguna Hills area was annexed and again the city was enlarged on 18
September 2000 when 149 acres known as the Westside Annexation area
was added to the city.
